Celebrating 9 years of supersonic

the epicenter of paris’s indie music scene

Supersonic is not just a music venue. It's a place that means so much to so many people. A place with a mission of the utmost importance; to spread the word about talented music artists. With each of their free events and shows, the club uses their platform to uplift underground artists, giving them a chance to gain a real-life following and loyal supporters.

Opening for the first time on February 2nd, 2016, the venue was founded by 2 friends, David and Hadrien. They bought the place, renovating and redecorating it to their own taste. It was another friend of theirs, Aurélien, who curated the schedules and found the bands that are now regular performers at the club. it wasn’t until 2021 that Supersonic Records opened, a venue on the same street as the original club, serving as a second venue for their shows, enhancing their block parties.

On February 6th and 7th, SuperSonic host a party to celebrate 9 years of the venue with bands such as Topographies, The 113, World Brain, and many others. Jack, the lead singer of The 113, performed for the fourth time with his band at the venue for their anniversary. “We absolutely love coming back here,” he admitted.“We’ve built a relationship with everyone that works here. It's a home away from home”.

Super Sonic not only gives these artists the chance for people to hear their music live, but they also allow them to experience one of the most receptive and energetic crowds possible. “The energy is pretty high. I feel like most of the time people will dance and headbang. Whatever the style of the music is, the people will adapt. It's a crowd that comes for this specific reason; they want to see live music, so they will be in this position to give back (the energy) and receive”, said Marc Phillips, a musician who visits the venue often and has performed there. Baptiste, another artist from the band Sour Tones, who have played at Super Sonic a handful of times, recalled “ the first time we played at supersonic; big crowd, big energy so we did stuff we’ve never done before like jumping in the crowd.”.

The crowd is actually one of the most notorious parts of the venue, with all kinds of different people that are united by one thing, their love of music. Marc also told NOIZE that “(Supersonic) enables you to have access to live music in a way that is kind of hard to find nowadays. And that also brings an interesting crowd because you get people that might not usually want to go to a live music event, but then might go there. And I also feel like they have their own crowd. They're always here to hype up the bands.”

“le supersonic est un lieu foisonnant et fut une expérience magnifique pour nous. C’est un des derniers bastions du rock indépendants et de la jeunesse, ça nous fait extrêmement plaisir de voir des jeunes, qui se déplacent et qui nous font confiance, qui font confiance à des groupes pas parisiens Le supersonic est une super expérience humaine et musicale et un vrai plongeon dans la scène indépendante, un passage obligatoire”

Roman Ausen, a Super Sonic regular— as a performer and audience member— also said “Supersonic was one of the first places I discovered when I arrived in Paris, and I was so excited to play there for my first show! It’s always a blast, whether on stage or at the parties”. When visiting the club, one can really see its impact on both the audience and the performers. They created such a comfortable environment for both parties. Although the musicians can be quite underground, ranging from 200 monthly listeners to 30K or more, the artists are very much hand-picked. They each have something so special that the crowd can always pick up on.

It can be said with certainty that the bands that play here are destined for greatness and deserve every bit of recognition their gigs earn them. i have worked closely with many of them in my work for NOIZE and i have never once had an experience that was less than delightful. They are always ones-to-watch and many are definitely on the rise. The place clearly means so much to a lot of people and has gained a well deserved loyal following. With genuinely talented and alluring bands, a spirited crowd, and an overall great energy, supersonic is a treasure of paris
