MEET avalon bloom:
tHE spirited INDIE ROCK BAND FROM MONTPELLIER
An integral part of Paris’s 90s-esque rock band revival, emerging band Avalon Bloom is on the rise. Frequent performers at the Supersonic club in the Bastille area, the band has new music coming out this spring and has been garnering the attention of the public in anticipation. As friends who met in graphic design school, Sam (lead singer), Tanguy (bassist), Nino (drummer), and Mathieu (rhythm guitarist) unite to create a nostalgic yet entirely new rock-inspired sound that crowds will enjoy whether they know the songs or not.
The members of the band are very crowd-conscious, considering how an audience would react to their songs when composing them. “I think the band is not only the four members. We try to communicate with the people that watch us and follow us. When we play a show, all the people are singing our songs. I think what makes us different is maybe not in the songs themselves but more in the way we communicate them and our relationship with the audience.” Tanguy explained.

Something else that makes this band different from their indie music peers is their mix of gloomy sounds with fast-paced and energetic beats. “There is a big revival of 90’s rock, so of course it's difficult to be more original in this way because we have a lot of love for this kind of music. But our difference I think is the mixing with punk elements, so we play shoegaze-y melodies and reverb with a lot of chords to our guitar, but the rhythm is always very fast.”
Another one of the Avalon Bloom’s unique qualities is their specific mix of influences from the individual members. The band’s rhythm guitarist, Matheiu said “I'm really into 90s rock like The Pixies and some classical stuff, Sam is really into 70’s music like The Doors and Tanguy is into hardcore punk. We are kind of mixing all these influences and making a new sound.”. Although they all have different tastes, they must find a common ground when making music together. “In our sound we pretty much like reverb, chorus, and some hard distortion on the guitar. This is the balance between some really nice reverb and a calm melody and some aggressive distortion. That's what we like and I think it gives an impact to the song. The Pixies and Nirvana were doing it. We take all these influences and we work on it.”
In terms of what they want to tell their vast and invested audience, all members agreed that one theme that all of their songs have in common is love. Whether it’s love for your friends, significant other, or life in general, the band tries to have that emotion come through in their songs. When asked about the meaning behind their songs, the band’s lead singer confessed that
“The message is that we all need to love each other… It's about the relationships that we have with our friends and the people we date. Mostly it’s about being happy with your life and the love in your life.”
. The bassist of the band would agree, saying “We want to tell them that we felt something and they can feel it too. It's normal. It's a lot based on love. We are young, but I think love is a big part of our lives. And the love of love. I think all the members are like me. We just want to tell our stories and make them more beautiful by turning them into something that brings pleasure to other people.”.
The band also sees the music they make together as something that represents their love for one another. When on the topic of what makes their music stand out, Sam answered
“I think its our friendship. When we are on stage, we’re not just a band, we’re friends. I think the difference can be heard. A lot of bands are not close with each other and the crowd can sense that the members aren’t connected. When we perform we include the crowd in our friendship.”

It is true that when watching Avalon Bloom perform, their closeness is palpable, which makes them appear much more comfortable on stage. A band that is composed of close members will always be much more energetic and lively when on stage and in their songs.
